Ernesto Sabato. 1991/1993.

Portfolio with 5 photographs, gelatin silver prints -measures: 18 x 24 cm / 7.08 x 9.44 in-, accompanied by a sheet of postage stamps and a small catalog with the photographs of Sabato made by E. Longoni, published by the Argentine Mail, whose day of issue was on June 24, 2021.

Longoni carried out this photographic project between 1991 and 1993, which resulted in a book edited by Seix Barral-Planeta in 1994. The five images gathered here are part of this work, and one in particular -the one that portrays Sabato in the Santos Places station, a few blocks from his house, was selected for the tribute broadcast by the Official Post Office of the Argentine Republic in memory of the 110th anniversary of his birth.

One of the most prominent Argentine writers of the 20th century, Sabato was born in 1911 and among his literary creations are “El Túnel” (1948) and “Sobre héroes y tumbas” (1961). With a doctorate in physics and mathematics, he dedicated his life to writing, and with the return of democracy in 1983, he assumed a public commitment of enormous value: he chaired the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP) and participated in the writing of the book “Nunca Más”, a study that documents the violation of human rights perpetuated by the State in the last military dictatorship. Among other distinctions, in 1984 he won the Miguel de Cervantes award. He passed away on April 30, 2011 at his home in Santos Places shortly before his 100th birthday.

Eduardo Longoni (Buenos Aires, 1959), Argentine photographer and teacher, has forged his style in photojournalism. In addition to participating in individual and group exhibitions, he made numerous photography books, garnered national and international awards, and his shots illustrate books published in various nations. In 2018 he was the protagonist of a title published by the Fondo de Cultura Económica, the work of the Mexican historian Alberto del Castillo Troncoso: “Photography and Memory. Conversations with Eduardo Longoni”.
